IN MEMORIAM—DAN P. COLE (1929–2017)

Dan P. Cole, 88 years old, died peacefully at his home in Evanston, Illinois, on December 10, 2017, from complications related to earlier heart problems. Dan was a veteran of digs at Shechem, Gezer, and Lahav, and was an intrepid leader of student groups to Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean. He received the B.A. degree from Columbia University; the B.D. degree, from Union Theological Seminary; and the Ph.D. degree from Drew University. He enjoyed a distinguished career as the William R. Bross Professor of Religion at Lake Forest College in Illinois. Dan was a long-time, loyal member of ñ.

Dan P. Cole

Dan’s publications include two major excavation volumes, Shechem I, on the MB II B pottery at Tell Balatah, and Lahav V, reporting on his excavations in Field II at Tell Halif. He also made contributions to several of the volumes in the HUC Gezer series. In addition to numerous other scholarly publications, Dan contributed widely to popular archaeological magazines including Biblical Archaeology Review. He was editor for several volumes of Archaeology and the Bible in the “Best of BAR” series.

Dan was a dedicated scholar and teacher, and a warm, gentle, and well-beloved colleague. He is survived by four daughters and their families.

Condolences can be sent to the family through Susan Cole, at 9511 Drake Ave., Evanston, IL 60203. Dan’s preferred charity was Doctors Without Borders.

Dan will be well remembered! May he Rest in Peace.
